Tania Fischer was invited at the last minute to run in the 100th annual Bay to Breakers 12k road race so she took up the offer. But before she boarded a plane yesterday, she had to coach her Santa Monica athletes at CIF prelims at Trabuco Hills High School.
Tania ran 44:47, a 6:01 per mile average and finished 12th overall in the elite division and 1st overall in the masters division over the 7.46 mile course. From sea level at the Embarcadero, where the start of the race is, the course rises steeply along the Hayes Street Hill. Around the 2.5-mile mark runners climb an 11.15% grade between Fillmore Street and Steiner Street. The remainder of the course gradually flows downhill alongside the Panhandle through Golden Park to the Finish Line at the Great Highway at the beautiful Ocean Beach. The photo at the right (thanks Sissel!) shows Tania climbing the famous Hayes Street Hill this morning, the steepest point of the race.
